Garnica and Alinea: innovation, sustainability and comfort at Laakdal Clinic with Performance Poplar

In the heart of Laakdal, Belgium, is a new multidisciplinary clinic designed to improve the efficiency and quality of medical care. Doctors Ann Weerts and Caroline Vanwelden, together with interior architect Leo Aerts of Alinea, were looking for a space where both patients and staff would feel comfortable and cared for. Their vision was to create a warm, welcoming and functional environment, where medical care is accompanied by an interior design that offers comfort and well-being.
The project is characterised by the use of Performance Poplar, a poplar wood that stands out for its unique properties. This 100% natural wood, used in acoustic walls and ceilings, not only provides a warm aesthetic, but also improves the acoustics of the spaces, creating quiet and private atmospheres. The 10% UV varnish finish ensures that the wood remains durable and fresh-looking over time, as well as being easy to maintain.
The 900 m² clinic was designed so that all spaces are at ground level and make the most of natural light. This contributes to a feeling of spaciousness and light, making for a more relaxed patient experience. Design elements, such as the red copper anodised aluminium joinery and PU resin flooring, complement the poplar wood, adding a modern and sophisticated touch to a space primarily focused on functionality and comfort.
This Garnica project demonstrates how the use of sustainable, high-performance materials can transform a medical environment, improving the work efficiency of healthcare professionals while creating a warm and friendly environment for patients. The combination of Performance Poplar with an integrated design not only stands out for its natural beauty, but also for its durability and sustainability, essential characteristics for a high quality healthcare environment.
