Garnica, a real commitment to carbon footprint reduction

Since Garnica made a firm commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, the company has been incorporating the carbon footprint register managed by the Spanish Climate Change Office (Oficina Española del Cambio Climático) in all its plants over the last few years. And thanks to this work, as of January 1, 2022, all Garnica work centers in Spain are using 100% renewable electricity. This is in addition to the heat energy required for the production process already sustainably generated from biomass. Both measurements mean that more than 95% of the total energy currently used in our work centers is renewably sourced.
The decrease in our carbon footprint is a result of this electricity use. As of 2018, we started using a “more renewable” electricity mix with which our greenhouse gas emission factor decreased significantly. This has enabled us to progressively reduce the CO2 equivalent (tCO2eq), a unit of measurement that calculates the emissions of all greenhouse gases, which in this case is measured in relation to the company's turnover.
2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | |
tCO2eq /€m. turnover | 98 | 73 | 69 | 44 |
The corporate carbon footprint is an environmental indicator that reflects the total greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted in a work center, both directly and indirectly. It is measured in terms of CO2 equivalent so it can be an objective and comparable indicator. Knowing an organization's carbon footprint is the first step in establishing a strategy to reduce or offset emissions.
In Garnica's specific case, the emission of these greenhouse gases is calculated for all the Group's work centers with scopes 1 and 2, i.e., fuels burned in the work center to produce energy or for transportation and electricity use in the factory.
Therefore, all this work by the company is in line with our ESG social responsibility policies and part of our commitment to ensuring the environmental efficiency of all our activities as we want to continue growing responsibly by using sustainable economic models to move towards a circular economy.
